The Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), Professor Dr. F. M. Siddiqui, inaugurated a two-day training workshop on “Good Clinical Practice” Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the Shahid Dr. Milton Hall of the university. The workshop has been organized by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of BMU.
Dr. Md. Hafizur Rahman, MBBS, MPH, Senior Associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, attended the workshop as the resource person. He presented informative and knowledge-rich papers on Good Clinical Practice, including its ethical implications, and the principles of bioethics and public health ethics. The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Nurun Nahar Khanam, Director of IQAC. It was jointly moderated by the Additional Directors of IQAC, Dr. Deene Mujahid Mohammad Faruque Osmani and Dr. Abu Saleh Md. Abu Obaida. A total of 37 esteemed faculty members of BMU are participating in this workshop.
In his inaugural address, the Honorable Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. F. M. Siddiqui stated:
“Workshops on Good Clinical Practice are a vital pillar for enhancing professional excellence in the medical profession. The knowledge and skills gained from this workshop by our respected teachers must not only enrich themselves but must also be disseminated among the resident students, junior doctors, and other faculty members of their respective departments. At the same time, this knowledge must be applied in practical medical education, patient care, and research. Let the knowledge acquired from here become a driving force in building a highly advanced healthcare sector and a developed, prosperous medical community for the future.”
Professor Dr. Nurun Nahar Khanam, Director of IQAC, emphasized the core objectives of the program, saying:
“The primary goal of this program is to strengthen our collective understanding of the ethical, professional, and scientific standards in clinical care and research. As healthcare professionals and academicians, the teachers and physicians working at this university bear a deep responsibility toward patients, society, and the advancement of medical science. ‘Good Clinical Practice’ provides a framework that helps fulfill these responsibilities with integrity and excellence.”She further added that in the current era, clinical research is becoming increasingly complex. Researchers and healthcare professionals are expected not only to generate evidence but also to ensure participant safety, protect human rights, maintain transparency, and uphold the highest ethical standards.
It was informed at the workshop that during this two-day program, participants will discuss various crucial topics in detail. These include biomedical ethics, public health ethics, professional responsibilities, administrative ethics, organizational culture, leadership, ethical decision-making, and the challenges of emerging technologies in healthcare.
The program has been designed to be highly interactive. Alongside presentations, participants will engage in group discussions, case analyses, ethical debates, and practical exercises. The extensive global experience of the resource person, Dr. Md. Hafizur Rahman, in global health, epidemiology, public health ethics, and international academic leadership will greatly enrich the participating BMU faculty.
This training workshop is expected to contribute to building a culture of continuous quality improvement across the university, reinforcing quality assurance initiatives, developing research, and strengthening academic excellence at Bangladesh Medical University. It will also further encourage BMU faculty toward ethical behavior, accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and a passion for lifelong learning.
The participating faculty members were urged to actively engage in the discussions, ask questions, share experiences, and reflect on how to integrate the concepts discussed here into their daily professional practice. Among others, Dr. Md. Saiful Azam Ranju, Md. Arif Khan, and Prashanta Majumder were also present at the event.
