“Messi speaks out after defeat in the World Cup final.”

After losing the World Cup final, Argentina captain Lionel Messi shared a message yesterday thanking the supporters. Argentina lost 1–0 to Spain in last Sunday’s final.

Messi posted a message in Spanish on his Instagram handle:
“The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I am also holding on to the positive things—the matches where we made comebacks, the effort we gave on the field, which will remain in memory forever. The support of the whole country, combined with this team’s hard work and determination, has once again taken us among the best in the world.”

He further wrote:
“Heartfelt thanks for every message and every gesture of support. Once again, we managed to unite the country and share the immense pride of being Argentine. At the same time, congratulations to Spain for becoming champions.”

Messi won the Copa América with Argentina in 2021 and 2024, and also won the 2022 World Cup. In this World Cup, he scored 8 goals and provided 4 assists, but had to accept defeat against Spain in the final.

For his outstanding contribution to the national team, Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia praised Messi on Sunday. Posting a photo of Messi at the final venue, MetLife Stadium, he wrote:
“This story will remain immortal. Captain, there are no words in the dictionary to thank you for everything you have given us. On behalf of an entire nation, thank you for your play, your unique leadership on and off the field, and for teaching us to dream and fight until the final second.”

Tapia also added:
“Thank you for filling our hearts with joy and emotion, for every tear of pride, and for raising our flag to the highest peak in the world. Leo, you are immortal. You are a hero. You made us the happiest nation in the world. And this home—your own home—will love you forever. Thank you so much. You will always be ours.”

Meanwhile, Argentina’s president Javier Milei has declared a national holiday to celebrate the team’s World Cup campaign. The team has been given the option to choose the date of the holiday, as announced by Milei on social media.
